extensive root system spreads the food supply and provides building material. Pathways ect are of root system material. (Not sure if this is description/idea would work only sure that their main food and life are based on the products of mushrooms. seemed appropriate for the fact that they live in caves on the bottom of a mountain and that they are related to snakes)
(if the roots are thick enough they could use them as bricks)
